Temporary Edge Protection Guidance Release date  02/04/2010

Temporary edge protection systems are primarily used in construction work to prevent persons and objects falling from the edges of roofs, floors and other areas where protection is required. It Is essential that once the edge protection is in place it is strong enough for the required duty.

The NASC has recently issued new guidance (SG 27:09) on this subject and NSG has extracted key points from it in order to brief its scaffolders. A copy of this can be downloaded from the toolbox talk section of the NSG website.

NASC launched guidance note TG20:08 Release date  29/01/2009

BS 5973 has been withdrawn because it is not consistent with BS EN 12811-1 and therefore the NASC’s TG20:08 has been prepared to give guidance to users in the absence of BS 5973. The principal differences between BS EN 12811-1 and BS 5973:1993 are as follows: 1.The definition of six service Load Classes, some with partial area loads. 2.The definition of seven width classes and two headroom classes. 3.A requirement for a minimum unimpeded area along the full length of the working area. 4.The definition of an in-service condition and an out-of-service condition. 5.A reduction in the number of working platforms in use for light duty, general purpose and heavy duty scaffolds. When in use a scaffold is considered to have one platform with 100% of the service load and one adjacent platform (above or below) with 50% of the service load. 6.In the absence of wind, a scaffold shall have applied at the working area, on every bay; a notional horizontal load applied separately parallel and perpendicular to the bay. 7.Wind loads on scaffolds shall conform to the national standard BS 6399. 8.A reappraisal of effective lengths for the purpose of estimating the safe loads on standards is presented. 9.The structural design shall be according to limit state theory.
